Drifter Rotax Top-Mount

Rotax Top-Mount Modification for Maxair/Lockwood Drifter


One of the modifcations we've designed for the popular Drifter ultralight/LSA is to change the engine mount location in relation to the root tube. Unlike recent Lockwood model Drifters, older model Drifters utilized a mount that "hung" the engine from the trailing end of the root tube.

 

Drawbacks to original inverted engine mount:

The original design hangs the engine inverted from the root tube, which carries a few minor disadvantages:


We've seen aircraft that actually have nicks on the elevator pushrod that runs along the top of the main boom tube. If you want to run a larger diameter prop, there simply isn't enough clearance to safely do so.

 


 Advantages of OLS Top-Mount Modification:

The solution is to mount the engine on top of the root tube. This carries several advantages:
